You Deserve Better!
State Representative District 22 Bangor Candidate
My husband Steve and I have been married for 31 years; I'm a mother of two, a grandmother to four, and a lover of rescue dogs ~ especially our three!
No, I'm not a native Bangorian or even a Mainer by birth ~ I am proudly and happily one by choice! I am 59, was born in upstate New York and lived in Texas for many years. When Steve and I were considering retirement, we knew it was the right time to do what we had always wanted: move to Maine, specifically Bangor! We've discovered wonderful neighborhoods, a solid educational system, a relatively low crime rate, an endless variety of cultural and entertainment options, and that we're centrally located for going on adventures to enjoy all that this gorgeous state offers. Moreover, we have met some of the finest people in the world here.
For over thirty years, my career has been as a public servant, first as a paramedic, then twenty years in emergency management, from which I retired as a Recovery Chief. While serving in those positions, I also volunteered hundreds of hours as a victim liaison, meeting and helping people during their most vulnerable times. Today, I work as a Victim Witness Advocate for the Penobscot Nation, drawing on my training, experience, and immense satisfaction gained through that volunteering. I am also certified as an emergency manager through the International Association of Emergency Managers, a Type III Liaison Officer, and a Continuity of Operations Program Master Practitioner.
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Security Studies in Intelligence and Analysis and a Master of Science in Homeland Security.
I'm a lover of liberty and a staunch supporter of the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the law of the land. I believe in the values our great country was founded on and am committed to serving my community.
Please feel free to call or send an email if you would you like to know more about me, Colleen O'Neal.
I do love Bangor and Maine. However, I am troubled by many matters jeopardizing Maine individuals, families, and businesses. I want to be Bangor's District 22 Representative in Augusta to be your voice! Bottom line, it's time we get back to a government by the people for the people ~ all people!
There must be balance within the government; it must not be just for the rich or poor, young or old, weak or strong, but for all! I am concerned, especially for those who have become marginalized in recent years: the working lower and middle classes, seniors, and veterans.
We must work to build a strong and sustainable foundation for all citizens of Maine to thrive, not merely struggle to survive. As a conservative Republican, I will work to develop and support policies designed to solve current problems with specific, measurable, and achievable results while being proactive in identifying and planning for our state's future. We need to focus on the following to achieve this.
Please email me at coneal2024@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
In my opinion, that is an egregiously erroneous assumption. I readily admit I think about taxpayers' money and ask that before you judge, please read why.
There are many critical unmet needs in Bangor and statewide. Far too many of our hard-working residents and retirees live in survival mode. The overall quality of life is suffering. Having a city where people want to live, work, raise their families, and retire begins with eliminating unrealistic burdens created in Augusta.
These burdens come in many forms and need to be evaluated and adjusted to guarantee they are equitable for everyone ~ beginning with taxes. For example, Maine's vehicle excise tax is one of the highest in the country. The current formula for determining registration fees was enacted in 1925, making it antiquated, ridiculously costly, and often ignored by those struggling.
I am also worried for those who unquestionably need social services. Yet, at the rate we are doling out money without restrictions, expectations, long-term solution-based planning, or strict oversight, too many are receiving tax dollars. The current system comes at the expense of, and detriment to, both taxpayers and those needing assistance. In the not-too-distant future, funding for social services will be diluted to the point where expenditures will barely make a dent in needs or become nonexistent.
Can there be a balance? Absolutely!!
I have many thoughts about healthcare, but my answer will be brief and concise.
Our healthcare system, including mental and behavioral health, is broken in Bangor and statewide!
To transform this, we must address the reasons why ~ availability, quality, and consistency. We must work to incentivize healthcare providers to want to practice here and stay. The focus has been on ensuring that all Mainers can financially access health care. But without providers, that is of little benefit.
Further, we must work collaboratively to have a Level 1 Trauma Center in Bangor. Not only for geographic reasons but also for the scope of care this designation mandates.
The Education system in Maine is overdue for a central review and overhaul! The following are only a few of my reasons for making this statement.
Every child is guaranteed an education; however, the realities of the quality and scope of that education vary widely throughout the state and even between schools in Bangor.
Law-abiding citizens should not lose the right to own any gun they wish nor live in fear that they or a loved one will become a victim of crime due to a failure of the government!
Every time there's a mass shooting or other violent crime anywhere in the U.S., there is a knee-jerk reaction to take away our Second Amendment rights to gun ownership. Doing this will not make us safer! Sadly, those who want weapons will always get them, and there will always be gun-related horrendous crimes – but we must and can do more to decrease them.
Here are the basics where I think we start:
I’ve chosen to be a Maine Clean Elections Act (MCEA) candidate for Bangor’s District 22 House of Representative seat!
The MCEA was initially passed as a citizen initiative in 1996, establishing a voluntary public financing program of political campaigns for state offices to encourage anybody with sufficient community backing to run for office.
I’ve chosen this grassroots means of funding my campaign as I believe in a government by the people, for the people ~ all people without regard to their financial means or special interests.
If you are a registered voter residing in District 22, I’d sincerely appreciate your $ 5.00 qualifying contribution in support of our campaign. Together, we can make today better and tomorrow brighter for all Mainers!
